Celebrate the Seniors in Your Life!

Greetings Readers!

Have you ever heard the phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child”? This week’s blog is focused on a part of that village, seniors! National Senior Citizen’s Day took place annually on August 21st. Though that day has passed for the year, it is still a great opportunity to show appreciation every day for grandparents or other senior adults in your village.

Here are a few positive affirmations for seniors:

  • I have the time to cherish the people who matter to me.

  • Every day, I contribute to the world.

  • I have the benefit of wisdom and experience.

Did you know that in a survey given to older Americans, a majority of participants stated that the best part of growing old is being able to spend time with their loved ones?

Cultivating strong family and community ties has many positive effects on youth. One of the greatest protective factors a youth can possess is having at least one adult in their life who is a positive role model. This protective factor can help prevent youth from developing substance abuse disorders and mental illnesses, as well as decrease their likelihood of participating in risky behaviors.

Grandparents can serve as positive role models to youth in a number of different ways. Grandparents can help their grandchildren and other youths develop their spiritual and cultural identities. As the oldest members of the family, grandparents can help tell the story of your unique family. Can you remember the last time you had a deep conversation with a senior in your life?

Here is a list of questions that youths can ask the seniors to get to know them better:

  • What is one thing you think everyone should know?

  • What were your parents/grandparents like?

  • What historical events have you experienced?

  • What were you like when you were my age?

Grandparents can be an asset in developing a youth’s social skills and emotional regulation. Different generations tend to value different things, meaning that interacting with seniors can expose youth to different points of view. This can foster positive social skills like empathy, tolerance, and using manners. Seniors can also set a good example of how to positively manage emotions because after all, they’ve had years of experience to practice!

Despite the generational differences that exist, we should all try to learn from one another. Just as youths can learn from seniors, seniors can also learn a lot from the younger generations. Developing a harmonious, intergenerational relationship is a gift that keeps on giving. Celebrate the seniors in your life this week, whenever you are able! We suggest marking August 21st on your calendar for next year, so you never miss a day to celebrate your village and show your appreciation!
