The Youth Mental Health Subcommittee are coalition members that have an active interest in promoting and/or teaching community education focused on youth mental health. In addition, subcommittee members take action in reducing the stigma around mental illness in their respective communities through social media, training, advocacy, and promoting awareness by participating in community events.

Project AWARE, an initiative coordinated by Touchstone and awarded by SAMHSA in 2015, aims to improve the quality of life for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years through the deployment of a cadre of individuals trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid. The service area is the Southwest Valley, which includes areas of West Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale, and Goodyear. Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course designed to educate those who interact with youth on a daily basis on warning signs of mental health problems, the importance of early intervention, and how to help adolescents who are experiencing a mental health crisis. This course teaches individuals about unique risk factors of mental health concerns as well as providing resources and the knowledge needed to intervene appropriately.

The cadre of instructors mentioned previously, are also CARE members and Youth Mental Health Subcommittee leaders. Their goal is to train their communities in the YMHFA Training in order to improve an understanding on mental health issues prevalent in the community, to correctly identify mental health warning signs early in its manifestation, and increase the number of youth to receive necessary behavioral health services by utilizing appropriate referral resources.
