Self-Care for Youth

Greetings Readers!

People talk about self-care and usually mention how it is essential for teens or adults. Adults live busy lives and sometimes forget to take some time for themselves which is why it is recommended they do some self-care every now and then. Teenagers are going through life transitions and changes in hormones and new stress, so it’s also recommended they do some self-care every now and then too. It’s important to consider that kids need self-care too! Some may think that kids don’t need self-care because they don’t work or do anything but just play and have fun. In reality, they do need some days where they focus on doing things they love and also doing things that will help them relax.

According to Child Savers 100, “Self-care can help kids of all ages become more introspective and aware of their physical and emotional needs and can also prepare them to effectively handle future stressors. Even small acts of self-care and self-help can decrease stress, improve relationships, and promote wellness of the body and mind” (Child Savers 100, 2022). So beginning self-care at a younger age can help kids be more emotionally prepared for the future. The best way to do it is to model the behavior yourself and include yourself in the self-care plans.

A good way to start is by planning a time during the day or the week to do self-care. For younger children it can be something as simple as having them brush their own hair, pouring themselves a cup of their own favorite drink, or even having a special bath with bubbles and essential oils if they’re not allergic. Encouraging kids to dance helps them release endorphins as they move their body to the music which can help them if they’re feeling stressed or anxious. Doing art is a fun activity they can participate in, and you can even turn it into a reflection by having them draw or paint how they feel that day. Encourage kids to just be themselves and let out any feelings or thoughts they have whether they’re positive or negative.

Elementary school kids can participate in the same activities but for them, it is more important that the family gets involved. Plan a daily quiet time where the family is involved to help build a stronger connection. During that quiet time, you can read a book or listen to a kid-friendly meditation on YouTube. The quiet time will help not only the child but you as well and anyone else who is present during that quiet time.

There are many more ideas for self-care for kids, it is important you cater to the child’s needs and let them be more in charge of what they do for self-care. That time is about them and doing something they enjoy.
