The latest gadget being redefined is the traditional cigarettes. Today are now known as e-cigarettes. Although e-cigarettes have only been around for a short time, the attention around them has increased due to the latest re-inventions and adaptations. Because of the recent additions, e-cigarettes are becoming a trend mainly among youth.
Recently we attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) conference where speakers shared relevant new information regarding vaping and teen use. In our November blog we learned about what vaping was and its addicting factors. Based on the conversation and researched presented at the conference members were advised by the CDC that youth exposure to the e-cigarette through advertisements has increased; in 2014- 68.9%, in 2015- 73.0%, and in 2016- 78.2% of adolescents had been exposed to advertisement, and this number is still rising. The same poll showed that 85% of e-cigarette users are in the ages of 12-17 and are using vaping due to the flavors. (CDC)
In addition, we learned that Juuling, which is a brand of vaping has had the latest news, check out this video of teens speaking on juuling https://youtu.be/7EsNG7RcStQ. The CDC fears that the JUUL craze is getting teens hooked on high levels of nicotine. As mentioned in November BLOG, one cartridge is equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. There are many trends to keep up with when it comes to this vaping epidemic so parents; let’s keep the conversation going, you have an important role to play in addressing this new epidemic on the JUUL as a parent it is important that you learn about the different shapes and types of e-cigarette use among young people, secondly we need to set a good example by being tobacco free.
