Celebrating Halloween 2021

Greeting’s Readers!

This year, Halloween 2021 falls on Sunday, October 31st. Celebrating Halloween, whichever way you chose, can be a wonderful time full of fun, and tons of candy of course! While some people may prefer to participate in Halloween parties, festivities, and trick-or-treating, others may prefer to celebrate at home. When planning how you and your family will celebrate Halloween this year, it is important to remember to practice safety. Below we will provide 3 safety tips to keep in mind this spooky season, as well as ideas on how to celebrate Halloween at home!

  • Costume Safety Tips: Try to keep costumes easily visible and short in length. Dark costumes are harder to see at night and long costumes create a safety hazard for tripping and falling. An idea to brighten up a costume is to wear glowsticks as bracelets or necklaces. Consider adding reflective tape (which can be found in most craft supply stores) to costumes or wrap it around the basket or bag your youth will be carrying to collect candy!

  • Neighborhood Safety Tips: If trick or treating, do your best to walk on sidewalks and not in the streets. Cross streets using crosswalks or designated intersection crossings. Look both ways for vehicles on the road when crossing. If you are driving, drive slower than the speed limit and watch for anyone who may be crossing the streets. Walk-in pairs, using the buddy system, or in a large group to practice safety. Remind your older youth of these safety tips if they will be walking on their own, or will be going with friends.

  • Candy Safety Tips: It Is best practice to check Halloween candy brought home before it gets eaten. Throw away any candies that are open, or are not in the original packaging. For younger children, consider removing candies and treats that may be a choking hazard (hard candies, gum, or toys like bouncy balls or marbles).
